The Fading Night

  When did we think that robbing the sky of its starlight was worthwhile? Did we notice the dulling of the night or did it fade so slowly that nobody noticed until it was too late? How many children will go their lives without gazing upon the magnificence of a starlit night? To stare upon the void only have distant stars winking back… Sublime. Yet we grew comfortable mistaking airplanes for the distant forges.  Our everlong quest for breathing easy has erased the breathtaking. A fire upon the fields fit for the gathering of many or the lone wanderer, mirrored by an expanse of incomprehensibly distant embers stoking their own flame, their own attendees orbiting the glow. To think a streetlamp is a worthy replacement is folly. We preferred to blot out the shine. Unforgivable.  I envision a life that would see the night sky restored, where flame roars both on the earth and in the cosmos. A synchronized crackling warming the long, dark night with radiance and wonder .  B...
